Photography with Purpose!

Montage by Jorina van der Westhuizen
From miniscule, 3 mm nudibranchs, to giant Whale Sharks and the hundreds of thousands of creatures in the World of Water and on the planet, are all available to those of us who for whatever reason, seek to capture their images and display them to the best of our ability.
My initial quest was to capture images of nature in such a way as to impact human nature as to the value of the World of Water and all its creatures, in an effort to display the beauty. I had hoped that through my photography and books and articles, humans might have a little more care for underwater nature that most would never actually meet.
If I could use my imagery to extract feeling of amazement for marine life then perhaps they would care for it a little more and in so doing, perhaps they might care for each other a little more.
We could hardly care for something that few knew existed.
Before concerns could be considered and conservation constituted,
we first needed to know what we had!
I set out to discover what was there and share my care with the world. Whereas I have dedicated my life to the pursuit of my persusaion, there is only so much one person can do.
However, even though most of my work was completed as a solitary venture, today there are thousands of underwater photographers all over the world concerned and doing their best to bring about changes in attitudes.
Scuba diving and underwater photography gave me the opportunity to explore my empathy and take a small boy on an incredible journey through the adventures of learning.
To me a camera was a magic weapon against the " dragons of the past" It took negatives, and turned them into positives, a wonderful philosophic concept and one I embraced with all my heart.
