The purpose of this eBook is to promote the philosophy that in regard to accidental injuries from Venomous Marine Life: “Prevention is Better than Cure!”
I've written and produced the three part Hazardous Marine Life eBook series Dangerous, Venomous and Poisonous Marine Life e-Books, not to frighten people away from our fascinating World of Water, on the contrary, the purpose of this series is to encourage people to part take in the amazing adventures of scuba diving, snorkelling and reef walking.

This series has been produced with the best of intentions, to share personal accumulated knowledge and experience that I've obtained over many years of diving, snorkelling and reef walking, knowledge gained that helped me overcome my fears of the World of Water and it's inhabitants.
By being able to recognize potential harmful situations, people are in a better position to understand the consequences of their actions and are able to take preventative measures.
It's of vital importance to realize that we are merely guests visiting the World of Water and it's inhabitants. We need to respect the Marine Life and become aware of our impact on them and consequently their instinctive behaviour towards us.

The more we improve our knowledge of the Marine Creatures, the more we'll be able to appreciate the uniqueness of these animals and understand our role and responsibility towards their conservation, ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy the beauty on our Oceans and it's inhabitants.
Join me and discover for yourself the wonders of our Oceans, armed with the understanding, that safety comes first!

In this series, Groups are introduced in alphabetical order by Common Name, along with the species, Family, Scientific Name and individual Common Name.
Southern Blue-lined Octopus
OCTOPODIDAE
Hapalochlaena fasciata
REMARKS:
This little octopus grows to 15 cm (5 in) and inhabits the sub-tropical waters of eastern Australia. It is by no means an aggressive species and will generally make every effort to conceal itself. When its escape is thwarted, or it is unduly disturbed, a switch in colour pattern is immediate. The animal turns darker in colour and the fine light blue lines on the back, and circles on the tentacles; expand and glow like pulsating blue neon. This is a warning signal to beware!
HAZARD:
Deadly venomous bite.
PRECAUTIONS:
It is during periods of irritation, or defensive aggression that the Blue-lined Octopus is potentially most dangerous to humans. This octopus should never be handled, or placed in contact with bare skin, as its venomous bite is fatal.

Common Lionfish
SCORPAENIDAE
Pterois volitans
REMARKS:
Found in the Indo-Pacific, this species grows to 38 cm (15 in) and inhabits coral reefs, rubble and sandy, mud bottoms; it also occurs around rocky reefs and in bays and estuaries.
It has very long, venomous dorsal spines with large dark spots on the rear flaps. The broad, filamentous pectoral fin rays are long and feather-like and the rear dorsal fin, anal fin and tail have black spots.
HAZARD:
Venomous dorsal spines.
PRECAUTIONS:
Some underwater photographers have been stung while trying (often without success) to reposition Lionfish for a better photograph. Do not attempt to reposition the Lionfish with bare hands.
Divers, photographers, aquarium collectors, or aquarium keepers receive the majority of wounds through direct interference to the fish. This is one fish that knows its defences and will deliberately bring them to bear when overtly harassed.
