Australasian Marine Photographic Index

Established in 1968 the Australasian Marine Photographic Index is a unique, ambitious, far-reaching project aimed at establishing a photographic inventory of the entire aquatic natural history resources of Australasia and the Indo-Pacific.

The index is the largest scientifically curated visual aquatic wildlife identification system in the Southern Hemisphere. It contains over 150,000 individual transparencies with data covering basic aspects of aquatic natural history, including habitats, associations, prey and predator relationships and mating behaviour of over 12,000 species of animals and plants - the majority of which are cross-referenced with identified specimens housed in State museums.

Original collections made by hand since 1963 have been housed in the following scientific institutions amount to over 15,000 lots.
Australia Museum - Queensland Museum - Victorian Museum - Western Australian Museum - South Australian Museum - Tasmanian Museum - Museums and art galleries of the Northern Territory.
