Steps to polish your car for a professional look

When it comes to polishing your car, it is really not that difficult but most of us do not get around to doing this task. A car is probably the second most valuable asset we own and polishing is a great way to protect your investment. Whether it is a daily car, your luxury vehicle or a 60 year old classic, polishing is essential to remove contaminants, reduce damage caused by natural weather conditions caused by wind, rain and the sun. As a lover of automotive, it’s painful to see the neglect some people put upon their vehicles, a simple process in polishing can help rejuvenate the paint of a vehicle and help maintains its value.  Let’s go over the process to help everyone understand how to properly polish their own cars.

Wash the car

It is most important to wash the vehicle that you are planning on polishing, a nice clean surface is vital to achieving optimum results.  Thoroughly wash panel by panel to ensure full coverage, start from the top and work your way down. Rinse each panel after washing and when your car is clean, use a chamois to dry the car by working your way from top to bottom again.

Smooth the paint finish

Use automotive smoothing clay such as Meguiars Professional Clay Bar to smooth the paints surface. Most of the time washing along is simply not enough, by running your hands through the surface you may be able to feel for imperfections and contaminants that are not visible.  Using the clay bar in conjunction with Meguiars Quik Detailer can remove invisible contaminants, road tar, tree sap, bird poo from the vehicles paint surface. Simply spray Quik Detailer on the paints surface and rub the clay against the wet surface, after running the clay bar over the surface, wipe the area with a microfiber cloth and run you hand over the surface, it should feel smooth and be ready for polishing.

Polishing

If you don’t have an orbital buffer for the job, I strongly suggest purchasing one as this would give the best result for your polishing job. It is important to know that each time you polish, the process removes a thin layer of the clear coat from the surface to rejuvenate the paints surface. Apply polish formula on the buffing pads and dab over the surface you are polishing, do not pour too much as it will take a longer time to buff and remove a deeper layer of clear coat than necessary.  Use the orbital buffer gently in a forward and back motion on 3000 RPM, after going over the area and when you see that the formula is drying up, wipe the surface with a microfiber cloth to expose a rejuvenated paint surface.

Waxing

Finish the job off with a good quality wax, it will help protect the paint and give it a smooth reflective look.  Again use the orbital buffer to wax the car in the same motion, one the car is all covered, allow it to dry for 5 minutes then wipe it off with a clean microfiber towel.
