SHELLS ALIVE !
- A Natural History Guide to all the Major Classes
Neville Coleman.
SHELLS ALIVE ! is just
what it suggests, a book exposing the secret lives of living molluscs.
The author explains in easy to understand terms how molluscs form
and build their shells, how molluscs move about, hunt down their
food and consume it.
Some have rudimentary eyes, others have acute chemoreceptors that
can detect slight traces of their prey's waste products.
Some catch their prey with fishing lines and nets of mucous. An
interesting aspect of the prey/predator relationship is that sometimes
the hunter becomes the hunted and may be consumed by other predators
unless it deploys its defence mechanisms.
Imagine, a male univalve's penis comes out of the right side of
its neck! The breeding habits of molluscs are revealed, along with
the various behavioural techniques used by different species to
mate and fertilise their eggs. It tells how helmet shells respond
to "help" signals from another helmet shell in distress
and take action to save its life.
With over 140 photographs covering the five major classes of molluscs,
the illustrations depict molluscs in almost every attitude of their
lives, from mating to meal times, day time and night time, and are
a photographic natural history record gleaned by the author from
many years of research and thousands of transparencies.
From sea shore to sea floor Shells Alive! provides a depth
of understanding into the intricate life histories of these facinating
and important animals - the living molluscs.
